«Breaking News» FA at pains to shrug off David Beckham's manager who had a longstanding deal

One of the longest contracts in sport is complicating the FA’s plan to bring the England players’ commercial operation in-house.

It has emerged that Terry Byrne, David Beckham’s former personal manager, has a deal in place to represent the Team England squad until 2030 — when the UK and Ireland could well be hosting the World Cup.

Yet the FA gave notice a year before the 2018 World Cup that after the tournament they would terminate the arrangement whereby Byrne’s 1966 Entertainment runs the players’ England sponsorship programme.

The FA want to run it themselves so they have full control of all their players’ personal appearances on international duty without involving any middle men.

But negotiations are continuing on the mechanics of how the FA intend to replace 1966, and how the players will compensate Byrne and his 1966 organisation for another 12 years under contract if they agree to the FA’s alternative set-up.

England captain Harry Kane is following a growing trend of having family members closely involved in managing his career. Both Harry’s father Pat and brother Charlie are working alongside his agents Unique Sports Management.

It didn’t seem quite right that Test Match Special newcomer Daniel Norcross, best known for his brightly coloured shirts, was behind the microphone for such a momentous broadcasting occasion as calling Alastair Cook’s century in his last Test innings.

Surely TMS should have changed their rigid schedule of 20-minute spells to allow Jonathan Agnew, the BBC’s cricket correspondent, to describe the moment, especially as Agnew has such a special relationship with Cook, whose resignation statement he helped draft.

But TMS keep to their timetable even if the commentator changeover is in the middle of a hat-trick.

Surrey responded to criticism that they had still not inscribed their winning women’s team name on to the Kia Super League trophy by adding Monday’s Test match centurions, Alastair Cook and Joe Root, to the Oval hundred honours board before the tea interval.

Lee, PR supremo, dies

Mike Lee, the brilliant sport PR strategist who arguably did more than anyone apart from Lord Coe to win the London Olympics bid, has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 61 at his Kent home at the weekend.

Lee, who formed the highly successful sports PR company Vero after the victorious London vote in Singapore in 2005, went on to secure numerous other bid triumphs, including the Rio Olympics 2016, Pyeongchang Winter Games 2018, Qatar World Cup 2022 and Paris Olympics 2024.

He also brought rugby sevens and surfing to the Olympics plus Britain’s Brian Cookson’s wholly unlikely presidency of world cycling’s UCI.

After a continuous run of such exhausting work, Lee had been off colour for much of the past year. He was married to Heather Rabbatts, the FA’s first female director and together they formed one of sport’s most influential couples.

BBC Sport, who never seem to stint on the legions of personnel they send to major tournaments, are nevertheless cracking down on expenses to the extent that unamused staff can now only charge a maximum £6 for lunch away from the office.

The mass RFU redundancies have seen a 10-strong competitions department reduced to just three staff, though another four will be joining who have no experience in the role. And all this at a time when the RFU are introducing an electronic match card system to record the result of every adult game through to the fifth XV.

An RFU spokeswoman said: ‘We are making changes to the competitions department that has sadly meant some people losing their jobs.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
