«Breaking News» Donald Trump told defence secretary Mattis he would 'become Nato rent collector' - book claims

Donald Trump decided early in his Presidency that the US would stay in Nato but defense secretary Jim Mattis would act as 'rent collector', according to the new book by legendary Watergate reporter Bob Woodward.

In an emergency meeting in February 2017 to discuss whether the US was 'in or out' of the organisation, Trump reportedly told Mattis: 'You can have your Nato'.

According to the book, entitled 'Fear: Trump in the White House', the last-minute meeting was called to settle the Nato policy ahead of a key speech by Mattis in Munich a week later.

The book claims Trump insisted on talking about the gossip of the day until dessert when former chief of staff Reince Priebus said: 'We've really got to deal with this Nato issue'.

Trump and his advisors then debated the pros and cons of Nato membership, with the President arguing: 'If you didn't have Nato you would have to invent it. There's no way Russia could win a war if they took on Nato.'

But retired general Keith Kellogg, the National Security Council chief of staff, argued Nato was 'obsolete' and the US was being 'used' by allies.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law also had his say, arguing that the US was losing 'pennies on the dollar' in supporting the alliance.

Mattis argued sternly in favor of membership and said he was confident Germany would meet its target of spending two per cent of GDP on defense.

Eventually Trump capitulated, according to the book, telling Mattis that the US would support Nato but its allies must pay.

He told Mr Mattis: 'You can have your Nato. But you become the rent collector.'

Mr Mattis reportedly laughed and nodded.

Woodward's explosive new book, seen by the Telegraph, also claims Trump nearly declared war with North Korea with a tweet in early 2018.

Trump was said to have 'scared the daylights' out of Mattis with the proposed tweet ordering US military dependents – thousands of family members of 28,500 troops - to leave South Korea.

Trump was said to have proposed the tweet even though a senior figure in the North Korean politburo had already signalled to them that any evacuation would be interpreted in Pyongyang as a precursor to military attack.

Knowing that, Mr Trump's tweet would effectively be a declaration war and could have provoked Kim into attacking South Korea. The tweet was never sent.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
