«Breaking News» Devils G Schneider (hip) could miss start of season

New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider could miss the start of the regular season as he continues to recover from a May 1 surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left hip.

Schneider will miss the entire preseason while he maintains his rehabilitation program, Devils general manager Ray Shero told reporters Thursday.

Schneider remains on track in his initial five-month recovery timetable, which would have him ready to go for Oct. 1. New Jersey opens the regular season in Sweden against the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 6.

Even if he isn't cleared to play, Schneider still should be able to travel with the team for the trip, according to Shero.

"He's been skating for a few weeks, so everything is basically on course and I think the timetable remains 5-6 months since his surgery," Shero said. "One thing I do know is that we won't rush and push him. He's not here to participate in the exhibition, but everything is trending in the right direction and we'll see the next couple of days as to whether he'll [practice with teammates] or work on his own on the ice."

Schneider, 32, sustained a groin/hip injury against the Boston Bruins on Jan. 23 that caused him to miss 16 regular-season games.

He started just 40 games last season, posting the highest goals-against average (2.93) he's had in a season where he has made more than five starts. His .907 save percentage was also a career-worst in seasons with more than five starts.

"I've skated with the guys a few times, but I wouldn't call it a full practice by any means, so I'm still in the rehabilitation and recover phase," Schneider said. "We'll take it day by day to when I can ramp up intensity and volume. Those decisions will be made by the training staff. We're not looking to have a setback late by pushing too hard, but the goal is to get me in game shape as soon as possible."

Over the next four seasons, Schneider is owed $6 million annually as part of his seven-year, $42 million deal with the Devils.

"The goal [of the surgery] was not only for this season, but I want to be healthy and effective for many more years, so it's not just a short-sighted thing I had done to get back for this season," he said. "I want to make sure that throughout my duration in Jersey that I can get back to being as effective as possible. We're keeping the long-term goals in mind here as well, so nobody is trying to rush or hurry things up."

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
