«Breaking News» Up to a million Britons may have to take new driving test if there is a no-deal Brexit

More than a million British expats living in Europe face having to retake their driving tests in their adopted country if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, it was warned yesterday.

But the 3.2 million EU nationals in Britain have been assured they will not have to take their test over here, government officials confirmed.

Last night the president of the AA described the arrangement as ‘grossly unfair’ and warned that thousands of British expats - many of them elderly - ‘will not relish’ the prospect of having to qualify to drive again.

A no-deal Brexit could pose a much bigger headache for many of the 1.3million Britons living within the EU. They will not be able to apply for an IDP

The Department of Transport (DfT) published two documents outlining the bureaucracy facing drivers planning holidays or living abroad if Theresa May’s Brexit deal is rejected this evening.

It said if no agreement is reached with Brussels, anyone with a UK driving licence may need to purchase an International Driving Permit (IDP) for £5.50 from the Post Office if they want to drive within in the EU after March 29.

But it warned a no-deal Brexit could pose a much bigger headache for many of the 1.3million Britons living within the EU. They will not be able to apply for an IDP.

Instead they will have to exchange their British licence for a local one before the UK leaves the EU if they want to be able to continue driving there.

The DfT warned that ‘increased demand may lead to longer processing times and delays to exchanging driving licences the closer it is to March 29, 2019’.

It said the UK government has assured Brussels that EU nationals already living in Britain will not have to retake their driving test.

There are an estimated 3.2million EU nationals currently living in the UK.

Last night one Whitehall official said: ‘As usual it is clear that Britain is bending over backwards. There is lots of political pressure in the UK to guarantee the rights of EU people living over here. What about the other way around?’

The AA pointed out that up to half a million expats living in France and Spain alone may have to retake their test.

Edmund King, president of the motoring group, said: ‘This is grossly unfair. Like all of these arrangements, it should work both ways.

‘Thousands of expats, many of them elderly, will not relish the prospect of having to re-take their driving test in a different country and different language if there is no deal.

‘Drivers without the appropriate IDPs could also be turned back at the ports. Unless these Brexit issues are sorted out soon many UK drivers living in Europe may well need to start practising for a new driving test.’

The DfT said expats who later return to live in the UK will be able to swap back to a British licence, provided they had passed their test in Britain.

UK driving licences currently qualify people to drive within the EU and the European Economic Area, which includes Iceland and Norway.

The DfT said if no deal is reached with the EU Britons may need to apply for an International Driving Permit to guarantee they can drive in Europe.

This is likely to apply until the government can reach agreements with individual EU members to recognise each other’s driving licenses.

Currently these permits are only required or recommended for visiting countries outside Europe.

From February 1, drivers will no longer be able to apply for a permit by post and will have to visit a Post Office.

Currently it also possible to obtain a permit from motoring groups including the AA and the RAC as well as the Post Office.

A DfT spokesman said: ‘The department has been fully preparing for a range of scenarios and has focused on no deal planning for some time.

‘The Government is seeking to put in place new arrangements to ensure UK driving licences continue to be recognised.

‘However, in a no-deal scenario an International Driving Permit will provide certainty to UK motorists visiting and driving in the EU after exit day.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
