«Breaking News» Uber developing self driving bikes and scooters that automatically return to their charging stations

Uber is developing self driving electric bikes and scooters that can drive themselves back to their charging stations after use.

The firm is already hiring engineers for the project, which is calls 'micromobility'.

It is hoped that by returning to their stations themselves, Uber can avoid the problem of dumped scooters and bikes that have plagued current services.

It announced the project at an Oakland event for teams racing self driving mini cars.

Jump, Uber's On-demand electric bikes and scooter division, is based in New York.

'I'm told that this team will actually live in Uber's @jump_rides group,' he added '@UberATG will continue to focus on self-driving cars.'

Uber has remained tight-lipped on the project, but says it will bring 'sensing and robotics technologies' to shared bikes and scooters.

Uber recently resumed self-driving car tests, nine months after one of its autonomous vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona.

The firm said it's resuming limited testing on public roads in Pittsburgh.

The return of testing comes days after the state of Pennsylvania granted Uber permission to resume testing.

The relaunch is a significant reduction from Uber's previous self-driving operations.

HOW WILL UBER'S BIKE SHARING FEATURE WORK?

Users select a nearby bike using the map found in the Uber app.

They are sent a PIN to unlock the bike they choose.

When customers reach their destination they can leave their rented bike at any public bike rack.

A bike zone is labeled on the Uber map, and customers must leave rented bikes inside the outlined area.

If a rented bike is left outside the area, users will incur a fee.

The company currently offers Jump bike rides in Washington D.C., San Francisco and other California cities.

The service will soon be rolled out in Europe.

Customers can take 30-minute trips for $2 a ride in the US. Prices for Europe have yet to be announced.

Uber had operated its fleet in autonomous mode on public roads at high speeds, after dark, in areas crowded with pedestrians and with a single backup driver in the front seat.

This time, the cars will not operate at night or in wet weather and will not exceed speeds of 25 miles per hour, the company has said.

Uber will resume testing with two employees in the front seat, enable an automatic braking system at all times, and more strictly monitor safety employees after it said it made improvements to the vehicles' self-driving software.

The company for the time being will not resume picking up passengers in the robot cars, a service Uber launched in 2016.

HOW DID AN UBER AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE HIT AND KILL A WOMAN IN ARIZONA?

A self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in the first death involving a fully autonomous test vehicle on March 19, 2018.

The accident prompted the ride-hailing company to suspend road-testing of such cars in the US and Canada.

The Volvo SUV was in self-driving mode with a human back-up operator behind the wheel in Tempe when a woman walking a bicycle was hit.

Elaine Herzberg, 49, died in hospital.

Police have said that the victim, 49 year old Elaine Herzberg, stepped out in front of the car suddenly and they do not believe the car was to blame.

Uber suspended its self-driving vehicle testing in the Phoenix area, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.

The testing has been going on for months as car makers and technology companies compete to be the first with cars that operate on their own.

Uber's self-driving car crash that led to the death of a mother-of-two could have been avoided, driverless vehicle experts have claimed.

Cortica, a firm that develops artificial intelligence for autonomous vehicles, has analysed the dash cam video.

The company concludes the car, which failed to brake or swerve before the collision, had enough time to react and potentially save Ms Herzberg's life.

Speaking to CNET, Cortica's CEO Igal Raichelgauz said the firm's self-driving AI system detected Ms Herzberg 0.9 seconds before impact.

At this point the car was around 50 feet (15 metres) away.

He said the autonomous car's cameras and radar system should have had enough time to pick up the pedestrian and react to the situation.

Driverless cars are fitted with a system of cameras, radar and lidar sensors that allow them to 'see' their surroundings and detect traffic, pedestrians and other objects.

An AI computer system then decides what actions the car takes to avoid a collision - a setup that is supposed to work as well at night as during the day.

A top executive for the maker of Lidar sensors used on Uber's self-driving car said she was 'baffled' as to why the vehicle failed to recognise Ms Herzberg.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
