The new acting Secretary of Defense issued a statement hours after a transfer of authority from James Mattis that twice references President Trump and commits troops to the 'greatness of our nation.'
The statement from Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan does not contain a reference to U.S. allies – as a final farewell statement from Mattis did, as did his slashing resignation letter after he decided to walk away from the Trump administration.
Shanahan, who spent decades as a top executive at Boeing, now steps in following the departure of Mattis, a highly respected Marine general who walked away following Trump's sudden announcement of an immediate troop withdrawal from Syria.
'Under the direction of President Trump, the Department of Defense remains focused on safeguarding our nation,' Shanahan's statement begins, acknowledging the commander in chief in the first sentence.
'Under the direction of President Trump, the Department of Defense remains focused on safeguarding our nation,' wrote
'As acting secretary of defense, I now look forward to working with President Trump to carry out his vision alongside strong leaders including the service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the combatant commanders, and senior personnel in the Office of the Secretary of Defense,' said Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan in a statement
'We have deep respect for Secretary Mattis' lifetime of service, and it has been a privilege to serve as his deputy secretary,' Shanahan continued.
'As acting secretary of defense, I now look forward to working with President Trump to carry out his vision alongside strong leaders including the service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the combatant commanders, and senior personnel in the Office of the Secretary of Defense,' he added.
His statement of carrying out Trump's 'vision' appeared to reflect the divergence that Mattis invoked when he concluded he could no longer work for Trump.
In just one pointed line from his December 20 resignation letter, Mattis wrote Trump: 'Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.'
Shanahan also wrote Tuesday in a letter that went out after 5 am: 'The Department of Defense continues to be one of our nation's bedrock institutions. Our foundational strength lies in the remarkable men and women who volunteer to serve our country and protect our freedoms, while making immense personal sacrifice. It is an honor to work with such a dedicated team committed to the greatness of our nation.'
Just hours earlier, Mattis' farewell message once again invoked U.S. allies – an area of disagreement Mattis identified with Trump. His own letter mentioned Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant, but did not acknowledge Trump, who moved up Mattis departure after his cutting resignation letter came out.
'Our Department is proven to be at its best when the times are most difficult,' Mattis wrote hours before a phone call where direct responsibility was transferred to Shanahan.
Shanahan's letter appears to be an early sign he intends to fall in line with the president's prerogatives as commander in chief, rather than serving as a check that Mattis considered himself.
The Washington Times noted that during his confirmation hearing to his post, Sen. John McCain expressed concern about his corporate background from a major defense contractor.
'I have to have confidence that the fox is not going to be put back into the henhouse,' McCain said then.
According to a blind quote from a former senior defense official in the New Yorker: 'Because he doesn't understand national security, and doesn't have the moral and ethical constraints that Mattis has, he's made no enemies. He hasn't taken a position on anything.'
Mattis issued a farewell message to Defense Department employees New Year's Eve where he once again invoked the importance of alliances in a final dig at President Trump.
Defense Secretary James Mattis referenced U.S. allies in his Farewell Message to Defense employees
Mattis, who announced his resignation immediately after Trump announced he was withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria and proclaimed victory, penned a letter to all of his subordinates Monday.
He began by quoting a brief message President Abraham Lincoln wrote to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. 'Let nothing which is transpiring, change, hinder, or delay your Military movements, or plans,' Lincoln Wrote grant, in a message that was transmitted in a cipher on Feb. 1, 1865.
The quote could well be a reference to Mattis' disagreement with Trump over his sudden Syria pullout, which was announced following a White House meeting that did not include the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the military.
Mattis had an aide print 50 copies of his Dec. 20th resignation letter. He announced his departure after Trump's sudden Syria pullout, saying he had a right to a Defense Secretary 'whose views are better aligned with yours.'
President Trump moved up Mattis' departure to Jan. 1 after his slashing resignation letter was revealed.
Mattis final letter also referenced U.S. alliances – a key feature of his earlier letter.

Mattis announced his departure after Trump declared victory over ISIS. Military analysts have estimated 30,000 ISIS fighters remain
'So keep the faith in our country, and hold fast, alongside our allies, aligned against our foes,' he wrote.
The line echoed his Dec. 20th comment: 'One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships.
Mattis' farewell message also referenced the oath sworn by Army privates and the president alike to defend the Constitution.
'Our Department's leadership, civilian and military, remains in the best possible hands. I am confident that each of you remains undistracted from our sworn mission to support and defend the Constitution while protecting our way of life,' he wrote.
'Our Department is proven to be at its best when the times are most difficult,' Mattis added.
Trump on Monday defended his Syria pullout and called himself a hero, even as he signaled about 2,000 U.S. forces would come home 'slowly.'
'If anybody but Donald Trump did what I did in Syria, which was an ISIS loaded mess when I became President, they would be a national hero,' Trump tweeted.
'ISIS is mostly gone, we're slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families, while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants,' he added.
That was a departure from weeks ago when he announced the pullout, saying 'We've won against ISIS.'
Conservative commentator and Trump critic Bill Kristol took the letter as a rebuke to the president. He tweeted about it, calling it: 'A quiet reminder that dignity in public life and honor in public service remain possible, and a silent rebuke to those lacking in dignity and honor.'

The exact amount can not say because there are many nuances. It will be necessary to build a small laboratory with certain parameters. To all interested persons please write on an email angocman@gmail.com . It is the scientific project and I do not know whether it is possible to earn on it. The probability of success of the project is approximately 60%. That will be very interesting.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
