An alarming photo shows inmates shoveling snow in their jumpsuits just ahead of Chicago's record-breaking cold snap.

The image of inmates from the Cook County Jail was shared on Facebook by La Villita, Chicago, on Monday.

'They got the inmates cleaning with no real winter gear,' the caption of the photo read.

Though the photo was blurry, it showed at least six inmates in their orange jumpsuits shoveling snow outside the jail as officers monitored them.

The photo was then shared by the Chicago Community Bond Fund which tweeted that the men appeared to be shoveling 'without proper winter weather attire'.

According to the fund, the inmates were 'paid $2 for their labor as part of the Sheriff's RENEW program'.

'We commented on their working conditions & the absurd idea that this was workforce training,' the fund tweeted.

'We hope the Sheriff's Office will provide the public with information about what is going on here and how these folks are being treated,' the fund tweeted.

Cara Smith, chief spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, told the Chicago Tribune that 'the situation was entirely and intentionally misrepresented'.

Smith said that the inmates were given insulated jumpsuits, gloves, hats and boots.

She said there was also a van nearby for warming.

Smith told the newspaper that workers in the program do not if temperatures dip below 20 degrees.

On Monday, temperatures in Chicago reached a high of 35F and a low of 9F.

But Sharlyn Grace, the co-executive director of the Chicago Community Bond Fund, questioned how shoveling snow helps inmates upon graduation from the RENEW program.

'I don’t think that anyone is seriously suggesting that shoveling snow is a skilled form of labor that’s going to lead to job opportunities upon release,' she told the Tribune.

Officials warned Chicago residents, accustomed to chilling winters, to expect an unusually deep and dangerous freeze.

‘They got the inmates cleaning with no real winter ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
