She responded to false rumours of her impending death last week with a light-hearted Facebook video insisting she was 'doing great'.
But behind the scenes, the 70-year-old Grease star was reportedly hurt by the fabricated reports, which stemmed from U.S. publication The National Enquirer.
A source close to Olivia told Woman's Day on Monday that the singer was 'brought to tears by the negativity surrounding her illness'.
'She was shocked by such negativity': Olivia Newton-John, 70, was left 'hurt' by false reports she 'was clinging to life', as friends claim she 'is responding to treatment better than expected'
'She has never been in denial about her illness, it's deadly serious and not going away. But it can be held at a certain level and that's what has been happening over the last few months,' the insider claimed.
'She is being treated by the best and is responding better than anyone could have hoped [for].'
The source added that the reports about Olivia's failing health had taken an emotional toll on the actress.
'All the talk is not just wrong but very hurtful and unfair,' they claimed. 'She was shocked to be faced with such negativity.'
Putting on a brave face: Olivia responded to false rumours of her impending death last week with a light-hearted Facebook video (pictured) insisting she was 'doing great'. However, behind the scenes she was reportedly deeply upset by the reports
Last week, various false reports surfaced alleging that Olivia had 'only weeks to live'.
An unnamed 'insider' told Radar Online: 'Olivia's bodily functions appear to be shutting down, but she refuses to let go until she makes it through [her daughter] Chloe's wedding day.'
This was followed by a similar report from Australian entertainment website Now to Love, which claimed she had a 'prognosis [of] weeks not months' to live.
Olivia's niece, Tottie Goldsmith, later hit back at the rumours, insisting that her aunt was 'in really good health'.

Her manager Michael Caprio also said that articles about his client's death were 'hilarious', adding: 'You might want to get better sources versus reading tabloids'.
Olivia herself addressed the rumours in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday.
'I just want to say that the rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated!' she said, looking in happy spirits while speaking from her family home.
'I am doing great!' she added. 'I want to wish you all the happiest and healthiest 2019 that is possible. Thank you all for your incredible love and support.'
Olivia, who is battling cancer for a third time, is being treated with radiation therapy and natural remedies including cannabis oil.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
