A Canadian cat who loves to sit in the window of his owner's apartment has become an online star thanks to a woman who works in the building across the street.
Erika Strong, a marketing employee at Shopify in Toronto, first caught a glimpse of the cat while staring out the window of her office. She became so smitten with the feline that she and her co-worker Alison Fleming concocted a plan to find out his name.
Using individual sticky notes, she and Alison spelled out 'What is your cat's name?' and stuck them to their office window in the hope that the cat's owner would see the message and respond.
Going all out: Erika Strong, an employee at Shopify in Toronto, took to Twitter to reveal the cat that lives in the apartment building across the street from her office is named Marshall
Plan: Erika and her co-worker Alison Fleming used individual sticky notes to spell out 'What is your cat's name?' on their office window
Erika took to Twitter a few weeks later to announce her wish had come true, sharing a photo of the adorable white cat sitting next to a sign hanging in the window that revealed his name is Marshall.
She also posted an image of the sticky notes she and Alison had placed on the window in their office building.
'Every day I stare out the window @shopify at a cat in someone’s apartment. Weeks ago @_myles and I asked what its name was,' she tweeted. 'Today they obliged and we've never been happier.'
Erika was extremely empathetic while reflecting on the possible reason why the owner took so long to share Marshall's name with them.
Success: Erika took to Twitter a few weeks later to announce her wish had come true, sharing a photo of the adorable white cat sitting next to a sign stating his name
Just a hunch: Erika hypothesized that the owner kept forgetting to bring home the sign with Marshall's name written on it
Loving it: Erika revealed she wanted to know even more about the cat
Winning question: People clearly wanted to know if Marshall was named after the rapper Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers
Success: Alison retweeted Erika's message, calling it 'the best day' of her life
'I like to imagine that the reason it took them so long to respond is because they had to print it out at work and remember to bring the piece of paper home. And every day they would say "Today's the day" but they would still forget. It's lightly crumpled so it checks out,' she explained.
Erika's original post quickly went viral, receiving more than 56,000 retweets and nearly 200,000 likes in just a few days.
Alison was among those who retweeted the message, adding: 'This is the best day of my life.'
Erika single-handedly turned Marshall into an online star, and it seems that only fueled her desire to learn more about the cat.
'What's the next question we should ask Marshall? cc @_myles,' she asked, providing a poll for Twitter users to vote. 'Here are some options for a follow-up question. Plz vote.'
You're famous Marshall! Erika returned to Twitter the next day to share another photo, revealing she added a sign with a website link to the window
Loving it: One Kansas native revealed the story made him want to move to New York City
Curiosity: Someone else wondered if the Toronto-based cat has a Canadian accent
Possibilities: Many people were delighted by the story and hoped that something similar would one day happen to them
Big wish: Mike Sharp hoped the cat's last name is Meowthers
Dark humor: Rachel de Morales joked about the cat looking to be rescued
'What's your middle name,' 'Do all cats hat Mondays,' and 'Mew?' were among the questions, but 'Like, after Eminem?' won with 41 per cent of the vote after a whopping 65,896 people weighed in.
People clearly wanted to know if Marshall was named after the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers.
Erika returned to Twitter the next day to share another photo, revealing she added a sign with a website link to the window.
'Patiently waiting for Marshall to return to the window and find out that he’s finally made it,' she tweeted.
People were delighted by the story and shared their thoughts in the Twitter thread, with one Kansas native saying it makes him want to move New York City.
'I want to believe I live in a world where this is a possibility,' someone else tweeted.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
