«Breaking News» New Jersey prankster mocked on social media for carving a peace sign on a giant ice disc

A New Jersey man has been ridiculed on social media for attempting to carve a peace sign on a giant ice disk formation a river in Maine.

A perfectly rounded ice floem, which was roughly 100 yards wide, formed in the middle of Presumpscot River in Westbrook last week when temperatures hit a bitter low of 8 degrees.

The frozen spectacle, which appeared to move in an anti-clockwise direction, was the subject of much commentary on social media with the public posting pictures of it on the city's Facebook page

It attracted crowds of curious locals and been the subject of worldwide media attention.

And New Jersey man Christopher Angelo was so impressed that he traveled to Maine with a chainsaw and decided he wanted to carve a peace sign into the ice disk.

Angelo, 44, from Lavallette, was spotted in the middle of the river cutting into the ice with a chainsaw on Thursday.

He later told WGME that he was an arborist and 'wanted to send a message of positivity to the world' from Maine.

He said: 'I'm an arborist, I’m a tree climber, it makes me uniquely qualified to do this because I use chainsaws, ropes, I'm making a giant peace sign and I want it to spin around so bad, and create that visual for people to see of peace making the world go around in Westbrook.'

His bizarre stunt caused a large crack in the ice disk, which is beginning to melt and becoming slushy in parts as temperatures increase.

The disk formed last week and rotated freely in the Presumpscot river until air temperatures plummeted and it froze into the river ice Tuesday

Angelo said he had set up underwater cameras, and planned to take core samples of the disk.

Decked out in a neon yellow lei, Angelo carried a pickax, hatchet and chain saw on his inflatable raft and told the paper that he wanted to get a master’s degree in ice disks.

He reportedly fell into the river at one point and was soaked up to his waist, but managed to quickly pull himself out and get back to work.

Angelo eventually gave up on Thursday afternoon. The Press Herald reported that the ice disk was 'still intact though somewhat scarred' when he left.

Angelo has previously been arrested in 2013 and 2014 for climbing and planting an American flag on top of storm-damaged rides at a New Jersey amusement park hit by Hurricane Sandy, according to the Press Herald.

Unsurprisingly his risky stunt was criticized and ridiculed on social media, with people questioning why he had traveled from New Jersey to Maine to spread the message of peace.

One Twitter user said  Maine should 'build a wall to keep these nuts' or 'deport people back to New Jersey.'

An anonymous Twitter account claiming to be the voice of the ice disk wrote: 'I always felt the message of peace and unity was implied. I’m really not into body art.'

The city of Westbrook said it strongly discourages people from going out on the ice, due to safety concerns.

Westbrook police received calls about the man Thursday, but said in a written statement to the Press Herald that Angelo was breaking no laws.

'It isn’t against the law to chop river ice,' wrote Westbrook police Captain Sean Lally.

'Unusual? Yes. Why someone would come here from New Jersey to chop up an ice disk is beyond me.

'I do know that the river will continue to flow and the Maine winter is far from over, so Mr. Angelo might want to seek long-term accommodations if he intends to defy Mother Nature.'

The city’s marketing manager, Tina Radel, had flown a drone over the river on Monday and captured mesmerizing aerial footage of the slowly rotating ice formation.

Researchers from Maine and far away have been intrigued by the ice disk, an unusually large example of a phenomenon that has been documented in rivers in North America and Europe but is not entirely understood.

Brown University researchers even set up a webcam overlooking the ice sheet to record its movements and eventual demise.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
