«Breaking News» Lewis Bennett accused sinking yacht death of his wife apologised to family for 'unimaginable pain'

A British-Australian sailor accused of intentionally sinking his yacht and killing his wife has apologised to her family - saying he made 'poor decisions'.

Lewis Bennett, 41, was sailing around the Caribbean with his wife Isabella Hellman in May 2017 when their ship sunk and his wife disappeared.

Bennett escaped on an emergency raft laden with food, water and a suitcase full of tens of thousands of dollars worth of coins.

Once his wife had presumably fallen overboard Bennett failed to set off a distress flare and he never turned around to look for her.

In August 2017 Bennett was arrested and charged with second degree murder, which he denied. But he later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.

On Wednesday, more than 12 months after his initial arrest, Bennett read a letter of apology before a packed Florida court.

'First and foremost, I would like to express my deep and heartfelt apologies to Isabella's family,' his letter, a transcript of which was obtained by Nine News, reads.

'I know that they have been through unimaginable pain as a result of my actions and for that I am truly sorry.'

Bennett maintains he fell asleep one night with his wife still on the deck. He claims he only awoke when the boat hit something and she was gone.

But the FBI says the catamaran had open portholes below the waterline and damage to both sides of the hull was caused from the inside.

The investigation found that Bennett was guilty for his wife's death, with the man charged with second degree murder in August 2017.

That charge was later downgraded to involuntary manslaughter, which he pleaded guilty to and is now awaiting sentencing.

His former wife's family has written to the court, saying the murder charge should be re-invoked.

'That Lewis Bennett is being allowed to plead to involuntary manslaughter is outrageous to us,' the letter read.

'After all, he did nothing to look for Isabella and actually took affirmative action to sink his own boat. His only apparent efforts were to save himself and the stolen coins that he had in his possession.'

A sentencing hearing will be held in May 2019.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
