«Breaking News» How Lorena Bobbitt cutting off her husband's penis became the biggest story of the decade

It has been 25 years since John Bobbitt was infamously attacked by his wife, who sliced off his penis with a kitchen knife as he lay sleeping in bed.

The Shakespearean tragedy that gripped the nation in 1993 and made international headlines is now being revisited in a two hour special with ABC 20/20 set to air tonight on ABC.

Bobbitt, 51, speaks out about the savage attack by his wife Lorena in Manassas, Virginia, for the show as family members and the media describe the hysteria which surrounded the shocking assault.

Television host Maury Povich tells the show: 'It touches every single Shakespearean theme. Love, lust, betrayal, conflict, drama. This had it all, including violence.'

Contributing editor of Vanity Fair, Lili Anolik, tells the special: 'Initially the story was local news. Kind of like a freak occurrence but it became a sensation and quickly.

'The public couldn't get enough.'

John Bobbitt's brother, Brett Biro, tells 20/20: 'This was the story that everybody was on. There was someone taking pictures, trying to interview somebody, trying to go by my mom and dad's house. Everybody wanted to talk to John, everybody wanted to talk to Lorena.'

In the special Bobbitt tells how how woke up to find his penis severed. 'It was a nightmare,' he said.

'I cleared my thoughts, applied pressure. I went to wake my friend up to tell him to get me to the hospital.'

Bobbitt, a former Marine, recalled that he remained as calm as he could under the circumstances, but that the friend who drove him to the hospital was 'going crazy' and screaming as soon as he saw the blood and realized what had happened.

At the emergency room, doctors saw the blood on his hands and initially thought he had cut his hands or wrists - not realizing the truth was far worse.

'Walking into the hospital, the doctor is - you know - looking at me, [and says] "show me your wrist,"' Bobbitt said.

When the sheet covering Bobbit's injured nether regions fell away to reveal the damage, the doctor's 'jaw dropped', he said.

The special episode also includes an interview with urologist Dr. James Sehn, who was asleep at home when he got the emergency call to report to the hospital.

'Really all I knew about this on the way into the hospital was that a penis had been amputated and the organ was missing,' Sehn said.

Lorena had fled the scene holding her husband's severed member, which she tossed into a field from the window of a Mercury Capri.

Cops scoured the area and recovered the organ, which they placed in a hot dog box filled with ice and rushed to the hospital.

After a marathon nine-hour operation, doctors managed to reattach the severed member - successfully enough that Bobbitt later famously starred in several porn films to demonstrate his restored functionality.

'It's normal now,' Bobbitt told ABC. 'I don't want to mess with it… it's been through the wringer.'

Lorena Bobbitt, who now goes by her maiden name Lorena Gallo, claimed that her husband had sexually and physically abused her.

'I didn't want to teach him a lesson,' she said of the attack in an interview with Vanity Fair in August. 'No, it was survival. Life and death. I was fearing for my life.'

Lorena was acquitted of criminal liability in the attack by reason of temporary insanity.

She served 45 days in a mental institution and now runs a charity to address domestic violence.

'I couldn't believe it, how could someone get away with it,' John Bobbitt told ABC News.

In a separate trial, John Bobbitt was acquitted of raping Lorena.

The two-hour ABC News 20/20 special, 'The Bobbitts: Love Hurts', airs on tonight at 9pm ET on ABC.

Link hienalouca.com Interesting to note Looking for an investor or sponsor for a project to grow dinosaurs and relict plants. Requires the sum of investments from 400000$ to 900000$. The exact amount can not say because there are many nuances. It will be necessary to build a small laboratory with certain parameters. To all interested persons please write on an email angocman@gmail.com . It is the scientific project and I do not know whether it is possible to earn on it. The probability of success of the project is approximately 60%. That will be very interesting.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
