«Breaking News» Greggs vegan sausage roll taste test: can the meat-free option match up to the classic?

Greggs' hotly anticipated vegan sausage roll is set to launch tomorrow - just in time for Veganuary.

An email leaked in December confirming the launch set social media ablaze, with meat-eaters and vegetarians alike desperate to get their hands on the meat and dairy-free offering.

The £1 Quorn sausage roll has been fiercely discussed on social media, with Greggs trending on Twitter in the UK after the announcement.

But will the pork-free sausage roll live up to expectations, satisfying both carnivores and plant-based dieters?

Femail put the pastry to the test, with five writers comparing the pork to the Quorn option.

Read on to find out if Greggs' vegan sausage roll fooled our meat eaters, or if they spotted the fake straight away. . .

Pork vs vegan sausage roll showdown

None of our five blind taste-testers were fooled by the Quorn version of the classic sausage roll, but most of them enjoyed it regardless.

The main differences were the saltiness of the 'meat', the glaze and colour on the pastry, and the dryness.

Siofra Brennan: I was actually really impressed. If I'd had it on its own without the meat one to compare it to, I could have believed it was real meat.

It had a good savoury flavour and a firm texture, it was more the vegan pastry that let it down as it was quite dry.

Once I ate the real thing, I could tell it was the non-vegan one as it more was moist with flaky pastry. But I've never had a Gregg's sausage roll before, so I could easily have been fooled!

Vegan sausage roll rating: 4/5

Unity Blott: The filling on the vegan pastry was dry, lacking in flavour and hard to chew. More seasoning would have helped. The pastry was also brittle and not as flaky as I would have liked.

The pork version had much more texture, the inside was moister and pastry had a nice buttery sheen to it.

Vegan sausage roll rating: 2/5

The main differences our taste-testers found was that the vegan option (furthest from camera) had drier pastry with less of a glaze. Most found that the 'meat' inside was flavourful - and almost believable

Maisie Bovingdon: I could kind of tell which one was vegan because of the colour, and it looks less glazed. It also has a bit more of a powder-y taste with super flaky pastry.

Taste wise both flavoured similarly with a herby taste, but the right one tasted saltier.

I probably would eat a vegan one over a sausage one purely because it's less fatty, even if it is a little drier and not as golden.

Vegan sausage roll rating: 4.5/5

Mared Parry: I could tell which one was real meat from the taste as I am a big Greggs fan, it was also greasier and looked more glazed on the top.

The vegan offering was definitely a lot drier, but the taste was really good. It  could definitely pass as real meat if I didn't have the other to compare it to!

The only thing it's really lacking is texture. I wouldn't choose it over a meat one, just because I love meat too much. But if I was trying to cut down on meat consumption, I definitely would.

Vegan sausage roll rating: 4/5

Sarah Finley: The vegan one was quite tasty, and it does taste and smell a little meaty.

But the real version looks more like a sausage roll and tastes a bit more meaty, but maybe a little more greasy!

Vegan sausage roll rating: 3/5

The vegan sausage roll is set to launch in 950 stores across the UK on January 3, and will cost £1 - which is slightly more expensive than the regular version.

Bargain hunters will be pleased to know the pastry is included in Greggs' savoury roll and hot drink deal for as little as £2.25, but sadly it isn't included in the four sausage rolls for the price of three deal.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: 'Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products.

'We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.

'It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.'

The popular bakery chain decided to launch the product following a petition by PETA which racked up more than 20,000 signatures last year.

Since the announcement, Twitter has gone wild for the snack, with one user saying they would be making their first visit to Greggs' at the age of 58 just to try it.

Excited fans were thrilled by the announcement that Greggs branches across the UK will be selling the £1 vegan sausage roll from tomorrow

Sharing the announcement, Lauren O'Neill wrote: 'How are u supposed to feel when u finally get everything u have ever wanted. What does my life mean now.'

Ashleigh added: 'Genuinely think this has made my year [laughing emoji] it's been nearly 5 years since I've had a Gregg's sausage roll!'

Another user joked: 'Greggs have done more to promote veganism in a day than peta have in their entire history.'

Meanwhile, one man said he'd be sleeping outside Greggs as if he were queuing up to see a royal wedding.

But not everyone is happy, with some users questioning why vegans need a fake version in the first place.

Craig Fleming asked: 'Can you call it a sausage roll if there's no sausage meat in it?'

Another user wrote: 'Some outrage over Greggs making sausage rolls for vegans, why? If you're not vegan you don't have to eat them, it's not like they're replacing normal sausage rolls.'

Craig McMartin added: 'Wow. I cannot express in words alone how little I care. I'll stick to proper meat sausage rolls, thanks.'

The ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
