The wife of Radio 1 DJ Greg James has revealed she was called 'pathetic' and 'desperate' by other women after she took the unconventional approach of popping the question to him.
Author Bella Mackie, 31, appeared on Woman's Hour earlier to discuss why women don't propose to men more.
Talking to radio presenter Jane Garvey, she discussed why men are still expected to propose in heterosexual relationships when we're in an age of equality?
'To me it feels like sexism in that we assume women are the ones that want to get married and that men will be the ones that are trapped by it,' explained Bella.
'Therefore it's not valid if women ask men because it might not be genuine and real enough. The man asking is almost like, "he loves me enough he will marry me".
'When I did it, there were lots of comments saying that I was desperate and pathetic and didn't value myself. The comments were from women rather than men.'

Bella proposed to Radio 1 DJ Greg James back in February 2018 and they tied the knot in a discreet ceremony last September.
Describing the moment she popped the question as a 'unique situation,' Bella revealed that the engagement was totally unplanned.
'Greg was going to climb some mountains and it was the week of Beast from the East,' said the writer. 'All of the papers were filled with warnings not to leave your as it's dangerous.'
'We went out for dinner the night before he left. I think he was a bit panicky but putting on a brave face and I suddenly thought, "Oh God, he's going to die."
She continued:' I thought I've finally found this nice chap and he's going to die. I had a glass of wine and obviously got a bit emotional - so it wasn't planned.
'I just thought I should really lock this down in case he dies. Just so I'm not one of the girlfriends at the funeral - it was a bit like that.'

Greg and Bella tied the knot in a discreet ceremony last September. Describing the response to her proposal as 'sexist,' Bella said: 'I guess because people might think it's demeaning to beg someone to marry you but of course, if the roles are reversed it's fine'
On the radio show, Jade Beer, editor of Condé Nast BRIDES said 'there's no rule' when it comes to engagement rings and men.
These things are so relaxed now you can kind of do it however you want to do it,' she claimed. 'I think it's this notion that women won't be taken seriously which stops a lot of them doing it.'
Meanwhile, radio presenter Jane Garvey said there are 'very few Bella's out there' - and the woman herself agreed.
'I guess because people might think it's demeaning to beg someone to marry you but of course, if the roles are reversed it's fine,' she said.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
