«Breaking News» The Favourite fans hit out at 'misleading' strong sex warning for lesbian romp scenes

The Favourite is dominating the glittering awards season as it has swept nominations across the board for the Oscars and the BAFTAs after winning a Golden Globe.

Yet the 15-rated film starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz has left fans seething because of the BBFC warning for 'strong sex'.

Social media was awash with complaints about the so-called 'misleading' warning as they insisted it was only given the caution because it depicts lesbian romps.

'Galling that #TheFavourite, which is wonderful from start to finish, is preceded by a content warning about ‘strong sex’. It’s actually mild sex, which has presumably been promoted to strong sex because it happens to be gay sex,' one fan wrote, leading the troops on social media.

The BBFC defended their decision to give The Favourite a 15 rating for 'very strong language and strong sex'.

While fans were in uproar, the non-governmental organisation claimed the film had the 'strong sex tagline' primarily for the heterosexual activity.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) told MailOnline: 'The Favourite received a 15 for very strong language and strong sex.

'The BBFC's Classification Guidelines state that very strong language is not permitted below 15. The Guidelines at 12A also state that any portrayal of sexual activity must be brief and discreet.

'The Favourite contains a number of sequences of sexual activity. In particular, one quite protracted scene of masturbation, which ends with a hand being wiped after the implied climax, is less than brief.

'The BBFC's Guidelines explicitly state that we apply the same standard regardless of the sexual orientation of the activity portrayed. Indeed, it was chiefly the scene of heterosexual activity we have described that resulted in the 15.'

Frail Queen Anne (Colman) becomes tangled in a love triangle as she is secretly romancing her closest adviser Lady Sarah (Weisz) before Abigail (Stone) arrives at court in The Favourite.

The court is thrown into chaos when new servant Abigail (Stone) learns of their secret love affair and uses it to her advantage.

With no qualms of pushing Sarah out the way, they become embroiled in a furious fight as Abigail attempts to seduce the queen in a bid to climb the social ladder.

The Favourite courted controversy for its implied lesbian romps as the film depicts Abigail sensually rubbing Anne's sore leg after the queen sees the servant naked.

Other raunchy scenes depict Abigail catching a glimpse of Lady Sarah sat in the queen's lap and later in her bed as they share a series of forbidden kisses.

The BBFC warning sparked furious dialogues between fans who discussed the LGBT+ content in the Oscar-nominated movie.

A viewer wrote: 'I have FEELINGS about this. 1) Why are films with LGBT+ content often one certificate higher than films with comparable heterosexual content??'

Another joked: 'Rated 18 for naughty leg rubs.'

Fuming, another wrote: 'Finally seen the Favourite & slightly confused by the note on the certificate at the start. Is "strong sex" code for "mostly implied lesbian sex"?'

A fellow viewer responded: 'I was equally baffled by that.'

Others responded: 'ALSO jsyk there really is hardly any sex in The Favourite, I don't know why it's classified as having "strong sex" there's more sex in like, Skins

'There is some nudity and some orgasm faces. Not in the same scenes.'

'Went to see The Favourite as a Christmas treat. It was so boring that I was only stayed because the ratings card warned of ‘strong sex’ and I wanted to see some good old lesbian ‘strong sex’ (spoiler: there was no ‘strong sex’ at all never mind lesbian ‘strong sex’).'

'My biggest gripe with #TheFavourite is that one of the warnings is ‘strong sex’ and I’m still waiting to see it. Can only assume implied lesbian sex is too much for the children.'

'I don’t recall any “strong sex” tbh (in Call Me By Your Name). Watched The Favourite this week which came with the same misleading warning.'

However, some fans admitted the 'strong sex' warning gave them an exhilarating thrill before the film started.

MailOnline has approached a representative for Element Pictures and BBFC for further comment on this.

In November, Emma discussed the moment she removes a sheet from her breast while filming a sex scene with Olivia.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I had the sheet up around me, and as we were shooting it and we did a few takes, I said, "Can I please just be [naked]?"

'Olivia was like, 'No, don't do it!' [director] Yorgos [Lanthimos] was like, "Are you sure that's what you want to do?" And I was like, "Absolutely." I chose to do it. I was like, this makes sense to me.'

Meanwhile, Olivia shared Emma's hilarious reaction when she placed a sponge in her private area while the Oscar-nominated duo shot the saucy scenes.

'Emma Stone was worried about me though because she had to finger me under the sheets. In order to avoid finding anything you shouldn’t have found… I asked the makeup department if they had a sponge.

'I put a sponge there and I said "it’s alright, there’s a barrier, you’ll be fine"… It was a big wet sponge. She was going up my leg and her face was a picture when she reached it! "It’s alright, it’s a sponge, it’s a sponge"!'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
