Doctor Who's much-hyped New Year's special is set to be the lowest-rated episode of the show since it returned with new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.
The series - which returned on October 7 2018 for its 11th [reboot] season - concluded on December 9, with an overnight audience figure of 5.3 million; but the January 1 special, which saw the infamous Daleks return to the show, lost a further 150k viewers.
Estimated overnight figures - which do not take into account those watching on catch-up - report that the tally of viewers was 5.15 million on New Year's Day, according to doctorwhonews.
Doctor decline: Doctor Who's much-hyped New Year's special is set to be the lowest-rated episode of the show since it returned with new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker
The show peaked at 5.8 million, but lost viewers in the overall average.
The loss of 150k viewers suggest the consolidated calculations will show a decline as well, when they are calculated next week.
Despite the newest episode producing 'a share of 22.4 percent of the total TV audience' thus 'making Doctor Who the fourth highest-rated programme for New Year's Day' it rounds of a season of the BBC sci-fi show that has lost viewers week-after-week.
The first episode in October drew in a healthy 10.96 million [consolidated], but by episode two it was down to 9 million.
With each episode, another chunk of audience, usually around 500k, was lost; although there was a slight peak for the season finale when the ninth episode drew in 6.42 million the week before and bettered this with 6.65 million the following week.
Dip: The series - which returned on October 7 2018 for its 11th [reboot] season - concluded on December 9, with an overnight audience figure of 5.3 million; but the January 1 special, which saw the infamous Daleks return to the show, lost a further 150k viewers
But the drop has been considerable for New Year's Day's 'Resolution', which is the only Doctor Who episode scheduled for 2019.
MailOnline has approached the BBC for comment.
The show was beaten by BBC One Drama Luther which drew 5.63 million viewers.
Coronation Street had 5.39 million watching, while Emmerdale had 5.17 million, both pipping the Time Lord to the post for a place in the top three shows of the night.

Falling short: Coronation Street had 5.39 million watching, while Emmerdale had 5.17 million, both pipping the Time Lord to the post for a place in the top three shows of the night
EastEnders attracted 4.74 million, Mrs Brown's Boys New Year Special followed with 5.06 million, The Chase drew 3.86 million and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? had 3.39 million viewers.
While there has indeed been a decline, recently released figures also showed Jodie's debut as The Doctor attracted the programme's highest average ratings for nearly a decade.
This comes after star of the show, Jodie, admitted that her success as The Doctor has proven that anyone, 'boy or girl', could play the character.
Musings: Jodie Whittaker said at a preview screening of New Year's Day special Resolution earlier this month that being the first female Time Lord has proven anyone can do it
For everyone: Answering a fan question, the actress said, 'because it's an alien, and because the Doctor has two hearts, it means you don't need any qualifications... [it] can be boy or girl'
Taking part in a special screening of the show's New Year's Day special at the BFI Southbank in London last month she was asked by a fan about being the first woman to play the character.
The actress, 36, said: 'It's interesting – it's a question I have to answer, because obviously the history of the show has always been a male Doctor.
'But I've never walked round thinking, "I'm a girl in this situation" – [but] there have been times where I've realised that there may have been some doors that were at a different angle to me, because of being a woman.'
Back soon: Jodie's remarks comes after Tony Hall, BBC's Director General, revealed that the next series of the show will air 'very early in 2020', though he kept a lid on more details
Huge success: On average, Jodie, and her trio of companions brought in an average audience of 7.7 million per episode across the ten shows
The Broadchurch star continued: 'I suppose playing the Doctor, because it's an alien, and because the Doctor has two hearts, it means you don't need any qualifications, you just need to go like that [gesturing outwards, with open arms] and that can be boy or girl.
'I think we knew that, but it's wonderful to be the first person in a position to really say, "See? We can do it!"'

Once again the Doctor will be joined by her three companions, Graham (played by Bradley), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill).

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
