A teenager has been jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering a man in his 50s when he strangled him to death during a sex game.

Daniel Kurmelovs, 18, will be in his 40s before he can be considered for release.

He will serve a minimum of 25 years for the murder of Frank Lennon, 53.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Mr Lennon invited Kurmelovs to his flat and asked him to strangle him for 'masochistic pleasure'.

But Kurmelovs, from Middleton, went further and murdered him.

He then spent around five hours in Mr Lennon's Collyhurst flat, ransacking the property and stealing £900 in cash, watches, jewellery and hundreds of cigarettes.

Kurmelovs squirted cleaning products and toothpaste onto Mr Lennon's body in a desperate bid to cover up the murder and destroy evidence.

Kurmelovs, who had never met Mr Lennon before, left with his loot and spent the next few days boasting about his crimes to his friends.

He dramatically altered his appearance by shaving his head.

Kurmelovs was arrested days later in Middleton after he told a woman he had 'killed someone' for the cigarettes he was trying to sell on.

At trial, Kurmelovs admitted manslaughter and claimed the death was an accident.

But a jury saw through his lies, convicting him of murder after less than an hour of deliberations.

Kurmelovs had only been free for nine days when he murdered Mr Lennon following a spell at a young offender institution after being convicted of robbery.

He stole from a 78-year-old woman at knifepoint in her own home.

Kurmelovs will serve at least 25 years for murder - and will only be released if the Parole Board deems it safe.

Sentencing, Judge David Stockdale QC said: 'Frank Lennon derived gratification from being strangled.

'When he invited you to his flat his purpose was to ask you to strangle him. It was not in order that he would suffer significant injury, and certainly not so he would die.'

The judge said Kurmelovs saw the invitation as a 'heaven sent opportunity' to steal from his victim.

'Lying face down on his sitting room floor, he could not have been more vulnerable,' he added.

'He was at your mercy. You took your opportunity and you strangled him. Your purpose was to rob him, and that's exactly what you did.

'You revelled in your appalling crime. The murder of Frank Lennon was a foul, wicked act.

'You ruthlessly killed a vulnerable man in his own home for the sole purpose of taking his money and his valuables.'

The judge also paid tribute to Mr Lennons' loved ones in court for their 'patience' and 'forbearance' during the week long trial.

His brother Alan said: 'He [Mr Lennon] would have a way of making you smile, we all desperately miss that.'

Alan said his brother had been hit hard by the recent passing of his partner.

They were due to go on holiday a few days after Mr Lennon's death to celebrate his 54th birthday

'The frustration that someone could take Frank away from us is heartbreaking, and now I just want justice for Frank,' Alan added.

The trial heard that Kurmelovs had bumped into Mr Lennon in the Gay Village on Friday, July 20 last year.

Unknown to his family at that time, Mr Lennon had been regularly meeting a man who he would pay to choke or strangle him for pleasure.

He had planned to meet the man that night, but a text Mr Lennon tried to send did not go through.

After spending the afternoon with two of his siblings drinking, they left and he went to the The Eagle bar.

Kurmelovs was being thrown out for being too drunk. Mr Lennon, who was described as being 'tipsy', was just arriving.

He asked Mr Lennon for money, but was refused.

Mr Lennon told Kurmelovs that if he was still outside the bar later, he would give him some money.

Kurmelovs, who said he was bisexual, later said he had gone into the Gay Village 'for a good time'.

He said he couldn't go home because he was too intoxicated after a drugs binge.

He said he had asked 'some homeless guy' to inject him with drugs.

CCTV footage showed the pair meeting again later that night, speaking to each other and at some points 'linking arms', before getting in a taxi.

They arrived at Mr Lennon's flat in Collyhurst at about 10pm, the last sighting of him alive.

Kurmelovs left the property at about 3.30am.

After failing to get hold of Mr Lennon that day, his concerned siblings visited his flat on Sunday, July 22. They found Mr Lennon dead in the flat.

His usually immaculately tidy home had been ransacked, and his loved ones noticed valuables were missing.

As well as the compression to his neck, Mr Lennon had suffered broken ribs, and cuts to his right ear which were found to have been inflicted after he died.

Kurmelovs later said he decided to cut Mr Lennon's ear to check if he was still alive.

He told officers that he had strangled Mr Lennon about five or six times 'on and off' while he was lay face down on the floor, first using his hands then a scarf.

In a police interview, Kurmelovs, from Middleton, said: 'I was strangling him then letting go.

'I didn't realise I had gone too far. He just hit the floor.

'He weren't moving. I checked his pulse and he was dead.'

Defending, Andrew O'Byrne QC said Kurmelovs had suffered abuse as a child, and sustained a brain injury after contracting meningitis.

'He is a young man who will have a long long time to consider how he has behaved,' Mr O'Byrne said.

In a statement released after the hearing, Mr Lennon's family said: 'Frank was much loved by all his family and friends and had much life ahead of him.

'Frank was taken from us in July in completely unnecessary circumstances.

We cannot express how devastated we are that his life has been stolen from him.

'Frank is missed every minute of every day. Today his killer has been sentenced, and justice has been served.

'We can try to repair our heartache although no matter how long the sentence is, it will not bring Frank back or make our loss any easier.

'We need to attempt to move on and hopefully today will now provide closure for our pain over the last few months, however, we will never forget Frank or the many memories he has given us.

'We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past few months.

Senior Investigating Officer Bob Tonge, of GMP's Major Incident Team, added: 'Kurmelovs brutally murdered Frank in his own home.

'Not satisfied that he was dead, he even took some scissors and cut Frank's ear - an attempt, he claimed, to see if he was alive.

'Frank also suffered fractured ribs at the hands of Kurmelovs who undeterred by his actions, set about ransacking his flat and stealing his possessions which he brazenly tried to sell just days later.

'Kurmelovs tried to suggest that his actions were accidental and eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter but thankfully the jury were able to see through that excuse and today convicted him of murder.

'My thoughts remain with Frank's family who have had to sit through the agony of a trial and the suffering of Kurmelovs' excuses but I hope today can provide them with some comfort, knowing the man responsible is locked away where he can't harm anyone else.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
