«Breaking News» 'Why aren't you laughing?': Studio 10 former executive producer reveals MORE of the worst guests

Rob McKnight, a former executive producer for Studio 10, recently revealed why he banned Australian Idol star Anthony Callea from appearing on the program.

And in an episode of the TV Blackbox podcast this week, Rob named and shamed two other stars that gave less-than-stellar performances on the Channel Ten show.

One of the unprepared guests was UK comedian Julian Clary, who was apparently 'out of his depth' and asked, 'What am I doing?', during a Hot Topics segment.

'He just wanted to tell a couple of double entendres and be done. But his management had put him on the whole show. Half-way through the first segment he actually said, "Well it's time for a break now",' Rob claimed.

'And the panel looked at him and said, "No, no, no, we've still got another 10 or 15 minutes to go!" Studio 10 was two-and-a-half hours long back then.'

Another of Rob's Studio 10 guests bombed so badly he even considered pulling him off the air altogether.

Australian comedian Austen Tayshus, whose real name is Sandy Gutman, is best known for his 1983 comedy single Australiana.

But Austen's appearance on Studio 10 was supposedly a disaster.

'Austen Tayshus came on the show and it just wasn't gelling,' Rob recalled. 'He was trying to get a laugh out of the audience and at one point he even turned to the audience and said, "Why aren't you laughing? This stuff is funny!"'

'And you know as soon as you're asking that audience that question you know it's not working,' the former TV boss added.

Rob revealed he even tried to intervene during the ad breaks to get the comedian back on track.

'I'd go out in commercial breaks and we'd try and talk to him and say, "Hey mate, what if you just tried lightening up a bit?"' he said.

'But ultimately we made the call to just try and get through and keep on going and we got through the show and had a good Bex [aspirin] and a lie down after that one,' he added, laughing.

Also during the podcast, Rob mentioned his bad experience with singer Anthony Callea's management team.

'We had a guest [Anthony] booked on the show, promoted it even,' he explained.

'We had to draw a line in the sand': Rob, who worked on the Ten program for four years, also said a bad experience with Anthony Callea's management guaranteed he was blacklisted

He then revealed the star's representatives called the day before he was scheduled to appear and cancelled so he could go on Channel Nine's Mornings instead.

(Mornings has since been rebranded as Today Extra, hosted by David Campbell and Sonia Kruger).

'[His] manager got in contact with us literally the day before and said, "He's not coming on. He's going on Mornings",' Rob said.

'We were like, "You can't do that, we've got him booked!" They said, "No, we're doing this."'

Rob, who was sacked by Network Ten last year, recalled that the incident happened soon after the launch of Studio 10 in 2013.

'I made it known to his management that if you guys do this - and you have every right to do it - he will never come on Studio 10,' he added.

'They just laughed at us and said, "You don't mean that". I said, "I actually do. We're not going to be treated like a second-rate show."

'This was when we were still trying to find our voice and identity and I believed that it was important to draw a line in the sand.'

Rob added that no-one in showbusiness 'screwed' them like that again.

'Word got out and everybody knew if you make a booking with Studio 10, you honour it. Because if you don't, you won't appear on the show,' he concluded.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
