«Breaking News» Tesco launches new avocado with 'easily peelable' skin in a bid to stop injuries

Tesco is launching a new variety of avocado with a 'easily peelable' skin - in a bid to stop hand injuries caused by cutting into the fruit.

The supermarket has revealed it is trialling an avocado with skin that comes away easily when cut in half.

The new variety, called Easy Avo, has a thicker and 'corkier' skin, which gives it an almost shell-like appearance.

The Easy Avo is significantly more expensive at £1.95, compared to 85p for a standard avocado at Tesco.

This is the first year that growers in South Africa have produced enough of the variety to support a trial, meaning the quantity will be limited.

It will initially go on sale in selected stores as a trial to gauge how popular the Easy Avo is.

Tesco said it believes the new avocado will go some way to limiting the number of so-called 'avocado hand' injuries.

Last year, leading plastic surgeon Simon Eccles said avocados should carry warning labels following a rise in knife injuries suffered when cutting into the fruit.

He said he treated about four patients a week at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for such wounds, with staff dubbing the injury 'avocado hand'.

Dr Eccles said at the time: 'People do not anticipate that the avocados they buy can be very ripe and there is minimal understanding of how to handle them.'

Commenting on the new launch, Tesco buyer Laura Marsden Payne said: 'Last year customers bought nearly 60 million avocados from us, so we're sure that this fantastic avocado will minimise fuss and make life a little bit easier.

'As the fruit ripens and moisture loss occurs in the process, the thicker, corkier skin separates more easily from the fruit flesh, compared to the thinner and more pliable skin of a Fuerte or Hass.'

HOW TO SAFELY PREPARE AN AVOCADO

1). Put the avocado on a flat surface

2). With a large knife, slice through it, taking care to go around the stone

3). Gently twist off the top half of the avocado and place to one side

4). Cut the half with the stone in half again, the stone can then easily be scooped out with a spoon

WHAT NOT TO DO: PUT THE AVOCADO IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND AND TRY AND HACK THE STONE OUT WITH A KNIFE

Don't put the avocado in your hand! Chefs generally agree that unless you're professionally trained, it's safer to lay the fruit on a flat surface

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
