«Breaking News» Sale 21-15 Worcester: Yarde and Solomona shine in front of England head coach Jones

Eddie Jones made an impromptu appearance here on Sunday and the England head coach saw two of his wing candidates set up this tense win for Sale.

New recruit Chris Ashton may be unavailable to the Cheshire club due to a ban, but Steve Diamond’s side have no shortage of firepower out wide.

Marland Yarde’s early assist and Denny Solomona’s 75-metre interception try helped the Sharks storm into an 18-0 lead — an advantage they just clung on to as Worcester rallied in the second half.

Jones had already been to Northampton on Friday night and Bath the following afternoon, but at short notice he decided to add to his motorway miles.

He didn’t see much to cause a major re-think of any selection plans. Sale captain Jono Ross, the South African-born, England-qualified flanker, was man of the match and he set the tone for a series of herculean defensive shifts by the hosts, while also carrying well in heavy traffic.

Ben Curry was another stand-out figure in the local resistance movement, but as yet the England management have not viewed him as the equal of his injured twin brother, Tom. Neither Ben Curry nor Ross are understood to be at the front of the queue for call-ups, despite the grim news that Brad Shields may miss the autumn series after fracturing his cheekbone on debut for Wasps.

The home wings both succumbed to lapses as Worcester hit back in Salford, but by then they had made their presence felt for positive reasons. Yarde was first to do so, in the seventh minute —superbly picking up AJ MacGinty’s patted pass and hopping over a defender before off-loading to Josh Beaumont, who crashed over. MacGinty missed the conversion, having already struck a penalty.

Solomona’s intervention was more dramatic, in the 33rd minute. Worcester were pressing forward when Sale’s No 14 intercepted, racing clear to strike from deep in his own half. MacGinty converted, after a penalty two minutes earlier, and when the home team held out for 38 phases before the interval, the result appeared to be a formality.

But the Warriors fought back. Seven minutes into the second half, Bryce Heem darted past Will Cliff to score from close range and ignite the visitors’ revival. Duncan Weir converted and kicked a penalty, which MacGinty cancelled out at the other end. Worcester kept coming though and Josh Adams’s slick pass sent Chris Pennell over in the right corner.

Sale withstood a barrage to claim the win they desperately needed after shipping a half-century of points at Harlequins eight days earlier. ‘We under-estimated Quins and we got put back on the coach with tears in our eyes,’ said Diamond, who hopes scrum-half Faf de Klerk may return from Springbok duty after next weekend. ‘That won’t happen again.

‘In the second half today, Worcester got their a**e in gear but that win was crucial after we got a right hiding last week. We know we have to be better than we were in the second half, though.’

His Worcester counterpart, Alan Solomons, added: ‘In the first half we weren’t happy with our execution, which meant they had the ball, but in the second half we had chances to close the game out. At this level, the margins are fine and our accuracy is key.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
