«Breaking News» Nintendo Direct September 2018: What we learned from the announcements

Nintendo followed up its massive E3 reveals, which included Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with a raft of new updates at its Nintendo Direct announcement on September 13.


There were plenty of surprises including announcements about Animal Crossing, a new Luigi’s Mansion game, a raft of new 3DS released as well as a new online service.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is in development for Switch


The Nintendo Direct presentation kicked off with a short clip from the upcoming Luigi Mansion game, which is called, Luigi’s Mansion 3. Not much has been revealed about the game other than it will be released in 2019.


Shinya Takahashi, General Manager of Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development Division, said: ‘Luigi’s next spooky adventure is in development for Nintendo Switch. We have a lot to say about the game, but we’ll have to save that for another time.’

Animal Crossing


One of the biggest news from Nintendo Direct was the reveal that Animal Crossing is coming to Nintendo Switch. 


The game involves players inhabiting a village with anthropomorphic animals, performing a range of tasks and activities including collecting things, socializing and spending in-game currency. Animal Crossing will be released on Nintendo Switch in 2019.


There was one more Animal Crossing reveal right at the end of the presentation, involving Isabelle, the mayor’s assistant from New Leaf has been unveiled as the latest addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is coming to Nintendo 3DS


Kirby’s Epic Yarn is leaping from the Wii, on which it was released in 2011 and on Wii U in 2016, to 3DS next year.


In the game, everything is made of yarn and the 3DS version will have all the original Wii features, as well as some new ones such as the ability to pick up items, make bigger yarn balls and create wind to bring in beans.

Bowser’s Insider Journey coming to Nintendo 3DS


On January 11 2019, the original Bowser’s Insider Story will make its way to Nintendo 3DS and will feature a new mode called Bowser Jr’s Journey.





Super Mario Bros U gets a deluxe makeover


Super Mario Bros U get the deluxe treatment on January 11, 2019, and will feature 164 courses and new playable characters such as Toadette and Nabbit.


Super Luigi U will also come with its own deluxe version free of charge as part of Super Mario U. The deluxe feature will also allow up to four players joining in.

Katamari Damacy Reroll is coming to Switch


The remaster of the original PS2 game Katamari Damacy is coming to Switch as Katamari Damacy Reroll this winter. 


The new version adds gyro controls, HD rumble and single Joy-Con controls for multiplayer battles.

Nintendo Switch Online


Nintendo Direct also saw the announcement of a new Switch online service. Launching on September 19, the new service offers data Cloud saves, connects friends and players around the world and will work with the classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games such as Excitebike, Mario Bros Arcade Classics Series.


A new phone app also lets players voice chat on certain games. In terms of pricing, a 1-month membership costs £3.49 ($3.99); 3-months cost £6.99 ($7.99); and a 12-month membership costs £17.99 ($19.99).

NES controllers


Nintendo is also introducing NES-style controllers that work wirelessly with the Nintendo Switch and are designed to work with all the vintage NES games.

Cities Skylines gets a Nintendo Switch edition


The popular city-building game was made available on Nintendo Switch after the presentation ended. Retailing at $39.99 (£35) the game features the player as the mayor, focussing on urban planning and city management issues such as transportation and traffic congestion. 


The game also features two expansion packs, After Dark and Snowfall, which expand on urban planning to include concerns such as nightlife and entertainment and weather elements.

Final Fantasy games come to Switch


A host of Final Fantasy games are coming to Switch including Final Fantasy VII, IX, X, XII and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
