At the age of just 20 Naomi Osaka is set to become one of the highest earners in sport in the wake of her stunning triumph over Serena Williams in the US Open final.
Long after the controversy involving her opponent has died down, the cosmopolitan 20-year-old will reap the dividend from being a major international achiever from the hugely lucrative Asian market.
Osaka’s affairs are overseen by a Scot, Stuart Duguid, who works for management giant IMG and has to deal with the huge corporate interest in her that pre-dates becoming the first Japanese winner of a singles Grand Slam.
Naomi Osaka is set to become one of sport's highest earners after her US Open win
She was already due to announce a significant new blue chip sponsor this coming Thursday, while her adidas clothing deal is up for renewal at the end of the season and could be worth somewhere approaching $10million annually.
‘We were already sort of managing her at IMG as one of our star female clients just based on her game, the way she looks on court,’ he said. ‘She’s from Japan with a multicultural background from Haiti and the United States, so she has the full package. She is very honest and down to earth and people are relating to that. She’s going to have a very successful career on and off the court.’
Duguid has been working with her for more than two years, and has got to know her tight-knit family, who choose to spurn the spotlight.

‘The family are really nice, very loyal and hardworking people who put everything into their daughters. Her mother (Tamaki) was working full time until nine months ago in an office job with Mitsubishi in Miami. They live in Boca Raton so she would drive an hour-and-a-half each way to work, come back home and work on her daughter’s stuff, they have incredible work ethic. The dad was the coach before handing over the reins.’
As men’s star Kei Nishikori has discovered, Japan is good place to represent when it comes to off-court earnings, and he is reckoned to have the second highest endorsements in tennis behind Roger Federer, topping more than $30m per year. He made the US Open semi-finals on Friday but has yet to win a Major.
‘We manage Kei so we know how strong that market is for endorsements, the blueprint was there,’ said Duguid on Saturday night. ‘There’s a lot of companies for whom Kei is the male and they are looking for a female, so it couldn’t be better timing. Her clothing deal is up at the end of the year so we are in discussions with pretty much everyone on that.’
The 20-year-old grew up idolising Williams but now wants to create her own legacy in the sport
Osaka, who is already backed by Yonex, Nissin noodles and Citizen watches, is a product of dedicated family, although her father Leonard Francois was not in the stadium for the tumultuous events of Saturday night, and tends to keep a low profile.
‘I think he might take long walks, because maybe my matches stress him out or something,’ said Osaka. ‘Since a long time, he’s always watched my practices and stuff, but he’s never really, like, sat in the box or anything.’
The question facing her now is whether she will become like many first time champions in women’s tennis in recent years and struggle to consolidate her breakthrough or be able to back it up with consistent deep runs in the Grand Slams.
There is certainly something different about her mentality, evident in her nerveless display. In technical terms, with her serve and movement she was more than a match for Williams before the American veteran lost her head.
It will not change the way that Osaka views her childhood idol: ‘I don’t know what happened on the court. So for me, I’m always going to remember the Serena that I love. It doesn’t change anything for me. She was really nice to me at the net and on the podium. I don’t really see what would change.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
