«Breaking News» Michael Kors is accused of stealing traditional Mexican sweater design

Social media users have slammed billionaire designer Michael Kors after the designer unveiled two pricey sweaters that are identical to those traditionally worn by Mexicans.

Two models walked down the Spring 2019 Michael Kors Collection runway at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday wearing similar items of clothing that many recognized.

Social media users were quick to accuse the fashion designer of cultural appropriation and 'stealing' the traditional Mexican design.

The original garment was first made popular in North America when surfers traveled to Mexico in the 1960s and took them back to California.

One of the items in questions is a sleeveless, multi-color sweater worn by a female model.

Then, in the middle of the show, which featured a host of big-named fashion stars including Gigi and Bella Hadid, a male model walked down the catwalk in a black and grey hooded sweater that drew the ire of many Twitter users.

Santiago Perez Grovas, a photographer and architect from Mexico City, shared a selfie of himself sporting a similar sweater, which he purchased for just a tiny fraction of the estimated $500 retail value of the Michael Kors design.

'New Michael Kors collection that probably costs thousands of [Mexican] pesos. A sweater that I bought two years ago for $180.00 [$10] at the Coyoacan market. For this and many other reason I hate the fashion industry,' he wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

The sweater can be found in local markets for as little as $5.

Marlen Trevino, a nutrition coach in Monterrey, Mexico, accused Michael Kors of stealing the design and shared a photograph of herself wearing a similar item.

'Here wearing a @MichaelKors [sweater],' she wrote. 'What an innovation of designs! #Teotihuacan #Mexico #Plagiarism.'

'Funny that a so called “designer” presents as his “own creation & inspiration”, a sweatshirt from Mexico and Central America,' Twitter user @nadiatorres shared Thursday.

'Somebody found inspiration in other people’s designs. What’s that called?'

And @mazetriaIs added: 'So michael kors is just gonna start making thousands of dollars out of something that mexican artists have been doing for years and years.

'Hell i already got it last year for 100 pesos... 5 DOLLARS. hell nah that ain't it.'

DailyMail.com has reached out to Michael Kors for comment.

Describing the inspiration for his collection, Kors, 59, noted that it had been inspired by travel and 'global getaways', explaining that he - ironically - wanted his designs to 'spread joy'.

Kors' show drew a host of A-list supporters, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman, Anna Wintour and Sofia Richie, all of whom sat on the front row during the 'sunny side up'-themed event.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
