«Breaking News» Justin Rose aims for world No 1 spot as he goes low at BMW Championship

Justin Rose will have a golden opportunity to become world No 1 for the first time on Sunday — and give Europe the perfect boost with the Ryder Cup now just over a fortnight away.

The 38-year-old Englishman will go into the final round of the BMW Championship in Pennsylvania with a one-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and American Xander Schauffele, knowing that if he hangs on to win he will displace Dustin Johnson at the summit and achieve one of his life’s ambitions.

Rose has flirted with the top spot since May, but it has never been closer than this. If he manages it, he will become just the fourth Englishman to achieve the top spot — the others were Sir Nick Faldo, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood —since the world rankings began in 1986.

Increasing the satisfaction if he does complete the feat would be the fact it came against a stellar leaderboard featuring the likes of McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who became just the fourth golfer in the last 30 years on the PGA Tour to follow one round of 62 or lower with another.

What a comeback this has been from the 27-year-old from Southport, who was a lowly tied 57th in a 70-man field after a first round 71. But, while one eight under par round got him back into the tournament, matching it on Saturday on this par-70 course has left him just two behind and in with a real chance of achieving his first win in America.

McIlroy, mind, is right there too after holing a mammoth 40ft birdie putt on the 18th to complete a fine 63. No one loves target golf more than McIlroy, and it was no surprise to see him prosper following a near four-hour delay for heavy rain.

‘I thought I did really well after a double bogey at the 8th,’ he said. ‘The back nine was really good, and it has left me in a great position.’ Rose, who won over this Aronimink course in 2010, was playing with half-way leader Schauffele but quickly made his experience count.

The course might have been fairly defenceless following the monsoon but it was still some effort to reach the turn in just 29 blows to turn a two-stroke deficit into a one shot lead. He finished with a 64.

Schauffele, 24, is hoping that a win would impress US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk sufficiently to claim the last Ryder Cup wild card that is due to be announced on Monday morning.

However, with more rain forecast on Sunday, the tournament might be heading for a Monday finish, which in turn could well delay the timing of the wild card pick.

Woods began with two straight birdies to electrify another enormous gallery but he didn’t capitalise on the perfect start, making just two more birdies thereafter to ‘only’ shoot a 66 to be five back.

‘I couldn’t get anything going on the greens, and now I’m going to need a 61 or 62 in the final round to have any chance,’ he said.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
