Stephanie Gilmore is among the four finalists in the women's event at the inaugural Surf Ranch Pro while Julian Wilson and Owen Wright are through to the final round in the men's.
World series leader could not improve on her two combination score of 16.26 from a day earlier.
But it didn't matter as she held onto fourth place after the qualifying round to progress to the decider on Sunday with Hawaii's Carissa Moore and American duo Lakey Peterson and Caroline Marks.
"It feels great, I love what I do here, but I know I have to step it up," Gilmore said.
"Tomorrow's a new day. It's an equal playing field for everybody.
"I'm going to have to bring my A game to see if I can get a win."
Gilmore leads Peterson by more than 5000 points with two events remaining after the inaugural event held on artificial waves.
Gilmore's fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons was one of few surfers to improve their score on Friday but her total of 15.83 was only good enough for fifth place.
Wilson will need to outperform series leader Felipe Toledo and second-placed Gabriel Medina in Sunday's final as he aims to reignite his title hopes.
He qualified second with a total of 17.27, with only Brazilian Medina ahead of him and series leader Toledo fourth.
"To be honest, I didn't watch any surfing today," Wilson said.
"I had no idea what's been happening but there are some big scores on the board and I knew I had some work to do to catch up."
Wright qualified fifth for the eight-man final with a combination score of 16.13.
Kelly Slater remains in contention to win the event on the waves he helped create by qualifying in sixth place.
In the final, competitors must surf three left-handed waves and three right-hand waves, with the combined total of their best left and best right counting as their final score.

But it...
It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
