«Breaking News» Former college golf star Barquín Arozamena found dead on Iowa course

A 'homeless' man has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a former Iowa State University golf champion at a golf course.

Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, was found dead at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa, Monday morning.

Police were called to the golf course around 10.20am after golfers found an unattended golf bag. Officers discovered a body some distance from the bag.

A criminal complaint says the Spanish national died after being repeatedly stabbed at the course, which is near her university campus.

Police arrested 22-year-old Collin Daniel Richards and charged him with first-degree murder.

Barquin had stab wounds to her upper torso, head and neck. The complaint says Richards was living in a tent in a temporary camp near the golf course and that he had allegedly told an acquaintance about his 'urge to rape and kill a woman'.

Richards' mugshot was later released, showing scratches under his right eye and on his left cheek.

Officers said he had several scratches on his face and a deep laceration on his left hand. They also recovered a knife in his possession.

He was booked into the Story County Jail just after 12am Tuesday morning. He is being held on a $5million cash bond.

Authorities said Richards has no known address, but he does have a history of domestic violence.

In January 2015, Richards was charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon in Guthrie County after he tried to steal two energy drinks from a gas station.

A few months later he was involved in a domestic violence incident. He ended up pleading guilty in September 2015 to first-degree domestic abuse assault.

He spent 90 days in jail, was given one year on probation and a $315 fine.

In January 2017, he pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment and was sentenced to complete an anger management program, according to online records.

At the time, he was also give two years of probation, a 90-day suspended jail sentence and a $625 fine.

Later that year, his father called police after coming home to find their residence badly damaged.

Court documents show that Richards admitted to breaking into the house to get his belongings after his parents kicked him out just days before the incident.

He caused more than $200 of damage and was arrested for trespassing.

In June, Richards was arrested for public intoxication. He was allegedly found passed out at a Hy-Vee supermarket.

Barquin Arozamena, from Puente San Miguel in Spain, was the Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year and was finishing a civil engineering degree this semester, having missed the beginning of her university life to take part in the Youth Olympic Games in China.

Iowa State University said she was one of the most accomplished players in their golf history.

'Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed,' Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said in a statement from Iowa State.

'Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador,' Pollard added.

Iowa State University President Dr Wendy Wintersteen said: 'This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and an acclaimed student athlete.

'We mourn with her family and friends in Spain, her teammates here and all who knew her. On behalf of the entire Cyclone family, I extend our deep condolences to Celia's family and her many friends and teammates at Iowa State. We are deeply saddened.'

Wintersteen described her as a 'dedicated civil engineering student' and an 'acclaimed golfer with a bright future'.

In April, Barquin Arozamena became only the second women's golfer at the university to earn medalist honors at a conference tournament when she won the 2018 Big 12 Championship with a three-shot victory (73-71-69=213).

Barquin Arozamena reached the apex of her career in July, just two months before her death, when she hit a course-record at Penati Golf Resort in Slovakia in the third round on her way to a one-shot victory in the European Ladies Amateur Championship.

She became the third Cyclone women's golfer to compete in the US Women's Open Championship and was ranked No. 69 nationally by Golfweek.

'We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life,' Martens added.

Her European win meant she would have been a competitor at next year's Women's British Open at Woburn.

Nacho Gervás, technical director of the Spanish Golf Federation, told El País newspaper: 'She was a player who was heading for the very top, without a doubt.'

Iowa State athletics are planning to honor Barquin Arozamena when they play Akron at football on Saturday.

Her funeral arrangements are still pending.

On Tuesday morning, the Colorado State Women's Golf team held a moment of silence before the second round of the Ram Classic.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, @CycloneWGOLF and Iowa State,' the team said in a tweet.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
