«Breaking News» England 1-2 Spain PLAYER RATINGS: Shaw was one of few bright spots before being KO'd

Gareth Southgate's men were brought down from their World Cup high by Spain, but England's UEFA Nations League defeat was overshadowed by a nasty-looking injury to Luke Shaw.

The Three Lions got the reception they deserved at Wembley as they returned to action for the first time since equalling their best-ever World Cup performance on foreign soil.

But Spain gave Southgate an illustration of the work still required as Saul Niguez and Rodrigo secured the visitors a 2-1 comeback win after Marcus Rashford had opened the scoring in their first-ever Nations League match.

England (3-5-2)

Jordan Pickford - 6

He might have hoped to do better with Spain’s first goal after getting a hand to it. Solid otherwise.

Joe Gomez - 5

One of two who failed to track Rodrigo for second, allowing him to ghost in. Not same level as Liverpool form.

John Stones - 6

Unfortunate to be booked after getting to the ball with an excellent tackle. Aside from that, generally comfortable.

Shaw had been England’s best player until he suffered a nasty head injury in the second half

Harry Maguire - 5.5

Seemed to be outfoxed by footwork in build-up to Spain’s equaliser. Carried ball forward well even under pressure.

Kieran Trippier - 6

Struggled to push up and that hindered England going forward. Spent much of second-half on fringes of game.

Dele Alli - 5

Was too deep for most of game. Had one opportunity to play in Kane in a dangerous position. Pass hugely overhit.

Joe Gomez failed to replicate his Liverpool form and was caught out by Spain's second goal

Jordan Henderson - 5

Dictated game in opening exchanges. Spain took control and he failed to impose himself again after Rodrigo’s goal.

Jesse Lingard - 5

A couple of nice touches but did not offer much in central midfield role. Same issue as Alli – game passed him by.

Luke Shaw - 7

England’s best player until the nasty head injury at start of second half. Impressive ball for Rashford’s opener.

Marcus Rashford - 6.5

Calm, composed finish for opening goal on the run. Seemed more comfortable as second striker than at World Cup.

Harry Kane wore gold boots but he was off colour as England slumped to defeat on Saturday

Harry Kane - 5

Golden boots but did not shine. Lost Rodrigo, sticking hands out without tracking. Looked leggy throughout.

Substitutes: Rose 5 (for Shaw 52), Dier 5 (for Henderson 63), Welbeck (for Rashford 90)

Subs not used: Butland, McCarthy, Bettinelli, Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Rose, Tarkowski, Dier, Loftus-Cheek, Delph,

Booked: Henderson, Shaw, Stones

Goals: Rashford 10

Attendance: 81,392

Referee: Danny Makkelie (Ned) - 6

Let the game flow where possible and none of his decisions, barring booking Stones for good tackle, were particularly incorrect.

SPAIN (4-3-3)

David De Gea - 7

Might have done better with Rashford goal but stunning reflex saves to deny his club team-mate later in first half and then in the second period. Fortunate to get away with late drop of the ball when Welbeck thought he had equalised.

Carvajal - 6

Neat interplay in build up to first Spain goal but Shaw raided with joy down his flank.

Sergio Ramos - 7

Booed by Wembley crowd amid his feud with Liverpool's Mo Salah but passed well and defended with authority.

Nacho - 5.5

Caught out by Shaw's terrific ball for Rashford opener early on.

Marcos Alonso - 6.5

Aggressive down the flank and justified selection ahead of the dropped Jordi Alba.

Sergio Busquets - 7

Not at ease with England's high tempo early on but grew in authority

Saul Niguez - 7.5

Clinical finish low and hard beyond Pickford. Competed without the ball and precise in possession.

Thiago Alcantara - 8

Darted into the penalty area beyond Maguire to set up Saul's equaliser and super delivery for Rodrigo's winner.

Isco - 6.5

Wonderful touches and always elusive. England struggled to keep track of his runs.

Iago Aspas - 6

Former Liverpool forward has recaptured best form in Spain and movement impressed here.

Rodrigo - 7.5

Fabulous controlled volley to put Spain in front. Justified selection ahead of Alvaro Morata in the absence of Diego Costa.

SUBS

Asensio (for Aspas 68) - 6 - Helped Spain keep possession and frustrate England late on.

Martinez (for Alonso 86) - 6 - Didn't put a foot wrong as Spain clung on.

Roberto (for Thiago 80) - 5.5 - A favourite of Enrique's at Barcelona brought on to stem the late English tide.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
