If you're trying to keep the cost of your weekly grocery bill down, freezing food is a great way to save.

According to Australian nutrition scientist, Dr Joanna McMillan there is a whole range of foods that can be frozen making this an ideal way to manage excess waste.

'Freezing is a really amazing way of preserving foods because you don't have to use chemical preservatives,' Dr McMillan said on Today.

'It's actually one of the oldest ways of preserving foods. It's actually under utlised in today's age where we think everything has to be fresh.'

She said foods such as cooked rice and pasta are perfect for freezing and her suggestion is to always cook a bit extra and pop leftovers into portion-sized bags.

Dr McMillan said having some cooked servings on-hand can ease the pressure if time is short after work and a quick meal is needed.

The expert recommends taking pasta and rice out of the freezer ahead of time in order to ensure it's properly defrosted.

Pasta and rice have a suggested storage time of between one to two months after it has been frozen.

The nutrition scientist also revealed nuts froze particularly well and this was a great option for keeping them fresher longer.

The recommended amount of time nuts should be stored for in the freezer is one year.

Flour is another food which can be frozen, Dr McMillan revealed.

It should be kept in an air-tight container and flour can be frozen for up to two years.

If you've grated extra cheese for a meal, this needn't go to waste sitting in the fridge. Instead, freeze portions in sealable bags for future use. Extra butter can also be frozen for future use.

The maximum amount of time cheese should be frozen for is six months. Properly wrapped salted butter can be stored in the freezer for up to one year, and unsalted butter can be frozen for six months.

Bread is also another food which freezes well, Dr McMillan said.

Either freeze a loaf and use as needed or turn bread into breadcrumbs and store these in the freezer in individual packets.

Breadcrumbs can be stored in the freezer for up to three months.

If you have an abundance of fresh herbs these can be frozen quite easily. Simply blitz in a food processor with a little water or extra virgin olive oil and place into ice-cube containers.

Similarly, store leftover stock, red wine and egg whites this way.

Herbs can be stored in the freezer for up to 12 months; wine can be frozen for up to three months and egg whites can be frozen for 10 months, according to CSIRO recommendations.

Uncooked chicken pieces can be safely stored in the freezer for up to nine months

Bananas which are starting to brown can also be frozen, however, Dr McMillan recommends peeling and chopping these first

What foods don't freeze well:

Foods that contain a high water content don't freeze well.

These include vegetables like celery, lettuce, zucchini, cucumber, cabbage

'These are great to use in baking if you're doing muffins for the kids or to add into smoothies,' she said on the program.

Frozen bananas will last in the freezer for between three to four months.

While freezing food helps to stay on top of wastage, Dr McMillan said it was worth being aware of the fact freezing doesn't completely stop bacteria growth.

'Often it will just make bacteria dormant so if food is a bit old, that's the sort of thing you don't want to put into your freezer,' she said.

‘Freezing is ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
