«Breaking News» Oxfordshire Grade II listed building will have two homes built in its garden - despite 82 complaints

A campaign to stop two 'unsightly' modern houses being built in the garden of another home in a Victorian conservation area in Oxford has failed despite 89 objections from neighbours.

Furious homeowners on Banbury Road, North Oxford, had slammed the two-storey buildings' 'full-length power-coated metal windows' and 'grey timber cladding that will resemble a large elevated fence' as out of touch with their Victorian surroundings.

The new homes will sit on a plot next to a grade II listed house known for its architectural features including giant brick arches.

Oxford City Council approved the scheme this week despite the chairman of the planning committee acknowledging they were 'Marmite' plans.

A dozen residents on Cunliffe Close complained the modern homes were to be built too close to their houses but the controversial plans were still given the go-ahead

The five-bedroom properties will be built in the grounds of a three-storey red brick house and include large one-storey basements.

Plans for the modern builds were slammed by 89 furious residents who thought the architecture was out of keeping with a road lined with Victorian-era housing.

They say development within the North Oxford suburb conservation area is meant to conform to its surrounding area of historical and architectural significance.

One comment on the application read: 'The buildings are unsightly and out of keeping with the properties of the area.

'The area is renown for its architectural beauty and has visitors from around the world.

'The buildings would be highly visible (especially when the deciduous trees have shed there leaves) and would have a hugely detrimental impact on the Conservation Area its neighbours and its visitors.'

Another comment, from a resident whose home looks out onto the plot where the houses will be built, said the homes would face towards their bedroom.

It read: 'First, the first floor bedroom of House no 1, located on the north boundary of the development site, would squarely face our master bedroom and en-suite bathroom, some forty feet away, thereby palpably infringing our right to privacy.

'The house itself would be a looming presence at the bottom of our very small garden.'

But Councillor Colin Cook, the chair of the planning committee who approved the application on Wednesday, said though it 'was a bit of a Marmite application' he thought the houses were 'a sensible addition to the area.'

He told MailOnline: 'It’s not that were pulling anything down to build these houses.

'They will be an addition and I recognise it was a bit of a Marmite application for some people. Some liked it some hated it.

'They are a sympathetic addition given that they are going to have large basements to keep the height down.

'They will be a welcome addition to that part of Oxford. They were high quality well thought through and good architecture.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
