«Breaking Pic News» Sergio Garcia lands controversial Ryder Cup wild card

Europe captain Thomas Bjorn has handed a Ryder Cup reprieve to Sergio Garcia, gifting the woefully out-of-form Spaniard a wild card pick for the match in Paris later this month.

Garcia was one of Bjorn's four wild cards announced on Wednesday afternoon, along with fellow Ryder Cup veterans Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey, as Bjorn looks to wrestle back the trophy meekly surrendered to the United States two years ago.

The latter trio's selections were all inevitable due to their combination of good form this year and lofty standing within the game, but Garcia's selection is controversial as it means a host of talent in much better form missed out.

The most disappointed men left at home will be Garcia's fellow Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Englishman Matt Wallace.

Cabrera-Bello made a big impression in a losing cause at Hazeltine in 2016, winning two points out of a possible three on a spirited Ryder Cup debut. The world No 29 also finished seventh in the PGA Tour's latest Fed Ex Cup play-off event last week.

Wallace won the final event before automatic qualifying was sealed, coming through a four-man play-off at Bjorn's home event in Denmark. It was his third European Tour victory this year alone.

Garcia, meanwhile, has suffered a horrendous slump in form since winning the Masters in April 2017. He has not made the cut in the last five majors and has slipped to No 30 in the world rankings in a miserable year notable only for a low-key win in Singapore in January and a single top-10, at the French Open held on the Ryder Cup course, Le Golf National.

SERGIO GARCIA'S RYDER CUP RECORD

Years Played: 1999, 2002 (winners), 2004 (winners), 2006 (winners), 2008, 2012 (winners), 2014 (winners), 2016

Total matches (W-L-H): 19-11-7

Singles (W-L-H): 3-4-1

Foursomes (W-L-H): 9-3-3

Four-balls (W-L-H): 7-4-3

At 38, however, Garcia has experience and a remarkable Ryder Cup record behind him. He has been the fiery backbone of the Europe team that has won five of the eight contests in which he has played, and if he wins three points in Paris, Garcia would overtake Sir Nick Faldo and become the all-time leading points scorer in the event.

Other European hopefuls to miss out included rising star Eddie Pepperell, another Englishman in Matt Fitzpatrick, Scotland's Russell Knox and Thomas Pieters, the Belgian who produced the event's best ever rookie performance at Hazeltine but has been dogged by poor form since.

Indeed, it is the number of rookies who qualified automatically that has influenced Bjorn to opt for experience over form in his wild-card selections. Five of his team will be debutants: Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Alex Noren, Tyrrell Hatton and Thorbjorn Olesen.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Open champion Francesco Molinaro complete Bjorn's 12-man line-up.

US captain Jim Furyk named three of his four wild cards on Monday evening, handing Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau tickets to Paris.

Furyk will add his final wild card to an already formidable US team next Monday after the conclusion of the third FedEx Cup play-off event, the BMW Championship.

Tony Finau is the favourite for the nod ahead of fellow rising star Xander Schauffele, with veterans Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson and the unheralded Kevin Kisner also under consideration. A win this week, however, will make any player difficult to ignore - but Kuchar is not playing after being eliminated from the play-offs due to poor form.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
