«Breaking News» What ISN'T 'too sexy for Tumblr'? New algorithms flag everything from 'puking unicorn' to Joe Biden

Tumblr’s porn-blocking algorithms aren’t off to a great start.

After the shock announcement this week that the site would soon be removing all adult content, including sexually explicit imagery and ‘female-presenting nipples,’ users have been sharing hilarious examples of what has so far been flagged.

Despite attempting to put pornography in its crosshairs, Tumblr’s algorithms seem to be reporting everything but; countless posts shared on Twitter show the site has flagged cartoons, raw chicken, shoes, and even former vice president Joe Biden.

The issue, though comical, highlights the concerns of artists and other professionals and hobbyists who have spoken out against the move, arguing that the crackdown will effectively strip their work from the site, too.

WHAT IS TUMBLR?

Tumblr is a blogging site that sits somewhere between Twitter and a traditional blog.

There are no length restrictions on Tumblr posts, but the culture of the site encourages short updates.

The major feature that makes Tumblr stand out is that it divides up posts by type: Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio, and Video.

Depending on the type of post, Tumblr serves up a different template.

Artists and photo bloggers are particularly fond of the network, as are fashion bloggers.

At this stage, it’s unclear what exactly the algorithms’ criteria are for identifying pornographic content, given the broad array of bizarre posts the site has flagged so far.

Tumblr has defined it primarily as ‘photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.’

But, according to frustrated users and the hashtag they've spawned, all sorts of content is now considered 'Too Sexy For Tumblr.'

In one example spotted by Motherboard, Tumblr flagged a packaged raw chicken.

In another posted on Twitter by University of Oklahoma law professor Sarah Burstein, the site identified a patent for a boot-scrubber as inappropriate.

And, dozens of other G-rated posts fell victim to the crackdown, too.

This includes a snippet and accompanying photo from a recent article about Joe Biden, a drawing of a ‘cute dinosaur in a flower crown,’ and a picture of a group of puppies.

An illustration of a vomiting unicorn also got caught up in the sweep.

Many have argued that Tumblr’s latest move is an overly-aggressive and misguided attempt to rectify its own mistakes, after the app was pulled from Apple’s iOS App Store on Nov. 16 for failing to spot and remove child pornography.

On Monday, CEO Jeff D’Onofrio penned a blog post to explain that, after ‘weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community,’ the firm would be moving forward with a plan to block all ‘adult content.’

Tumblr defined adult content primarily as ‘photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.’ But, other imagery has gotten flagged in the crackdown

While much of this was long allowed on the platform, the CEO says users will now simply have to go elsewhere to find it.

‘There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content,’ D’Onofrio said.

‘We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
